Derek Carty

Derek Carty, 24, is a fantasy baseball writer and analyst living in New Jersey. He began writing about fantasy baseball in 2007 at a small, independent blog and was asked to start a fantasy section for The Hardball Times less than two months later. Since then, his work has also been published by ESPN Insider, Sports Illustrated, NBC’s Rotoworld, FOX Sports, and USA Today, among many other websites and publications. He joined Baseball Prospectus as their Fantasy Manager in 2011.

Derek is also the Chief Operating Officer of Fantasy Squared, a new fantasy game that is best described as fantasy fantasy sports. Fantasy Squared operates using an underlying fantasy league—either your own private league or a public experts league, such as Tout Wars—and takes the form of a market-style game, allowing players to “buy” and “sell” things that happen in the underlying league—which team will win, who got the better end of a trade, etc.

You can find Derek in print this season in Baseball Prospectus 2012, Extra Innings: More Baseball Between the Numbers, The Fantasy Baseball Guide, and Fantasy Baseball Index. You can find him in person during the Baseball Prospectus Book Tour and at the SABR Analytics Conference in March.

In his four years competing in expert leagues, Derek has won 2 titles with 5 top-three finishes. In 2009, he became the youngest champion in the history of LABR—the longest-running expert league in existence—taking home his first title as a rookie. Derek is a proud graduate of the MLB Scouting Bureau’s Scout Development Program (aka Scout School) and is the only active fantasy writer to have graduated from the program.
