LINK: Jeff Zimmerman, two-time Tout Champ, looks at the stats teams can buy on waivers

We missed this FanGraphs’ piece from February, which uses Tout Wars 2017 stats to ask and answer the question of how many stats do teams find in their original rosters, and how much is added later?

It’s well worth a read.

Tout Wars Mixed Draft 2018 is Finished!

It was a super fast draft, completed in less than three hours. Four hundred and thirty five players were selected. Todd Zola barely had time to spell the names right in the spreadsheet.

You can see the spreadsheet, by round and by position, here.

Round ups by: DJ Short | Scott White | Adam Ronis (podcast) and part 2 | Rudy Gamble |

The Tout Wars Leaderboard is Updated!

Fred Zinkie has won the most (imaginary) money the last five years, finishing in the money for the seventh straight year! (This post originally said Zinkie finished out of the money in 2017, but that was in error.)

But Fred’s remarkable dominance is being challenged by Rudy Gamble, who has finished second, second and first in his first three seasons in Tout, and Jeff Zimmerman, who has finished first twice in his two years. They both have a long way to go however, and Zinkie keeps on ticking.

You can see and peruse all of the results, and Tout Wars history, on the newly updated Tout Wars Leaderboard.

Finally! Doubt Wars 2017 Results Are Here!

It took some time. Data had to be collected and collated and, in some cases, entered.

Rankings needed to be made.

And finally, a blog post written. All done? We now have final results for Doubt Wars 2017.

For those who don’t know, Doubt Wars is the game in which contestants choose their own fantasy teams based on the prices paid in the Tout Wars Auctions, before the season starts. For the price a player went for, plus $1, teams roster 23 player squads with a $260 budget and compete all season long in the 10 Tout Wars categories (5×5 with OBP instead of BA) using the same rosters. There are no substitutions.

When it comes to collating, the multiple leagues are joined and compared to the draft day results of the actual Tout Wars teams. For the first time this year, all three Doubt Wars leagues were won by Tout Wars owners, not surprising in a year in which Tout Wars winning owners set records for most points and biggest margin of victory.

The winners are:

Doubt Wars NL:

  1. Grey Albright, Tout Champ
  2. LynchMob, civilian
  3. Witty Puns, civilian
  4. Team 19, civilian
  5. Phil Hertz, Tout

Doubt Wars AL

  1. Jason Collette, Tout
  2. Jon Pierce, civilian and two league champion in 2016 Doubt
  3. Mike Podhorzer, Tout Champ
  4. Jeff Erickson, Tout
  5. Staff Ace Trevor Bauer, civilian

Doubt Wars Mixed

  1. Jeff Zimmerman, Tout Champ
  2. Ron Shandler, Tout
  3. Mixed Strategies, civilian
  4. Jason Reyes, civilian
  5. The Laser Show, civilian

You can see the entire results here.

Civilian winners will receive some fantasy products from our sponsors Shandler Park, Rotowire, Mastersball, Pattonandco.com,  BaseballHQ and The Fantasy Baseball Guide.

Thanks to onRoto for supporting Doubt Wars.

Who’s Picking Whom? Tout Daily Picks for July 28th.

Todd Zola has a huge lead. Andrea LaMont a nice one. Tonight they play the deciding fourth week of Tout Daily. At stake are golden tickets to the two top finishers, entry to the September 1 finals at Draft Kings.

But now, some picks:

PHIL HERTZ

Jose Quintana and Wilmer Flores.

JEFF BOGGIS

My top hitters for tonight’s #ToutDaily contest are: Marwin Gonzalez (HOU – 3B/OF) at Detroit $4,600 and Josh Reddick (HOU – OF) $4,700 at Detroit. Stacking any Houston Astros player makes a lot of sense tonight as they face Jordan Zimmerman and his 5.81 ERA and 1.56 WHIP.

My top pitcher for tonight’s #ToutDaily contest is: Alex Wood (SP-LAD) vs. San Francisco, but he is going to cost you the most to roster a pitcher at $11,700. Look for him to bounce back from his first loss of the season where he allowed 7 earned runs.

LAWR MICHAELS

Jaime Garcia ($6900): I’m a Bay Area guy, and I have some hope for the Athletics future at this point. But as of now, they suck against lefties (righties, too, as a matter of fact) and the first time they face Garcia, I give the advantage to him, especially in a pitcher’s park.

Chris Taylor ($4700): Pretty hard to ignore the smoking hot Taylor (.512-2-9 over his last ten games) facing the completely hittable Matt Moore, who carries a 5.82 ERA with 17 homers and 138 hits allowed over 111.3 innings. Ugh.

RICK WOLF

JOSE ALTUVE – Jose Altuve is the best player of anyone on the road.  He has this incredible slash line .396/.463/.507/1.070 OPS on the road since the beginning of 2016 which is more than a year and a half of absolute domination.  Throw in 46 SBs vs RHP in that time and you have a gem any time he is on the road.

DANNY SALAZAR – Salazar has been red hot including a one hit performance vs the Blue Jays just six days ago.  Salazar came off the DL to immediately make an impact and playing the hapless pale hose makes me salivate for another big win from the Indians.

CHARLIE WIEGERT

Top pitchers…going on the cheap side with two guys with upside; Andrew Cashner at home vs Baltimore and Jeremy Hellickson at home vs Atlanta.  Both are in a good spot to get a W, and could have 8+ strike outs.

Top hitters…with the $ saved on pitching, I can roster some top hitters; Harper, Stanton & Blackmon in the OF, plus hot hitters Contreras, Taylor, Dejong and Donaldson.

MIKE GIANELLA

Top pitcher: Danny Salazar

It’s feast or famine with this guy, but as the Tout Wars web site pointed out last weekend I need a near miracle to qualify despite winning last week. Salazar could flame out but the upside is too much to pass up

Top hitter: Freddie Freeman

He has tailed off post-injury…to the tune of a .315/.383/.562 line in 81 plate appearances. Freeman is a beast, and has a matchup tonight against the second worst starting pitcher in K% among qualifiers

TODD ZOLA

Alex Wood ($11,700): I’m in protect mode, not only for the period but also for the overall points lead. It doesn’t get much safer than Wood at home versus the Giants.

Mookie Betts ($4,600): Though not as potent as last season, returning to Fenway Park after a road trip usually revitalizes the Red Sox offense. Regression has caught up to Vargas, at least in terms of homers, I’ll take Mookie with the platoon edge as one of my more expensive hitters, especially since he’s actually priced down a bit.

The Week’s FAAB Reports for July 24.

Todd Zola and the crew as Mastersball have lots to say about this week’s FAAB spending, and the charts to back it up.

Mike Gianella breathlessly charts the spectacle of Derek Carty buying JD Martinez in various Tout and LABR leagues, because he had the most FAAB to spend, plus all the other action for the week at Baseball Prospectus.

It’s Friday. Must be Tout Daily Picks!

Period 4 of Tout Daily by Draft Kings starts tonight. All teams start fresh. The top 2 finishers after four weeks will win tickets to the finals on September 1.

Here are their picks:

PHIL HERTZ

I’m recommending James Paxton at home against the A’s and Jose Abreu at Coors.

JEFF BOGGIS @JeffBoggis

Max Scherzer (WAS) $13,200 vs. Atlanta Braves – The highest salaried pitcher tonight, but I can build a team around him. He is money for 10+ K’s and 7-8 innings pitched. He faces a mediocre Atlanta Braves team at home tonight. Roster Max Scherzer tonight if you want to beat Lawr Michaels in period 4, week 1 of our Tout Wars DFS contest! #BeatLawr

Aaron Judge (NYY) $5,600 vs. Milwaukee Brewers – He is coming off back to back home run games on 7/4 and 7/5, and is well rested after the Yankees had the day off yesterday. I like the matchup against Junior Guerra and his 4.93 ERA and 1.60 WHIP. Roster Aaron Judge tonight if you want to beat Lawr Michaels in period 4, week 1 of our Tout Wars DFS contest! #BeatLawr

GENE MCCAFFREY

Pitcher – James Paxton has been erratic since his return but is in a great matchup at home against the strikeout-prone A’s, and reasonably priced.

Hitter – Wilson Ramos has picked up right where he left off in 2016, which was a 1.008 OPS vs. lefties.

CHARLIE WIEGERT

Top Pitchers…Going out on a limb and taking R.A. Dickey at Washington and against Max Scherzer.  I might the only tout taken him tonight.  Dickey has pitched well the last three times out, and if the knuckler is dancing in Washington, he might just win.  Also taken Carlos Martinez, who would like to make up for his last horrific start and pitch a gem heading into the All Star game…but a tough match-up against DeGrom!

Top Hitters…the Dickey selection saved me the dollars to afford Gary Sanchez, Paul Goldschmidt, Jose Altuve and Nolan Arenado, an all star infield and great lineup for any fantasy team, but it always doesn’t work out in Daily!  We’ll see!

RICK WOLF

Cole Hamels —  Hamels is coming off his best start of the season, and faces an Angels team in which he has recorded five of six quality starts with a 2.93 lifetime ERA against.  That includes one run off four hits vs them back in April.

Daniel Murphy— Murphy is 4-6 with two homers lifetime vs Dickey.  Murphy is keeping pace with his career high .347 average last season by hitting .340 so far this year.  Six of his eleven hits vs the Braves this year have gone for extra bases.
